How do you explain death to a four year old?

This afternoon I had to take JR to the doctors as he has impetigo on his face! As regular readers know I don't drive, that meant we had to walk although its not far just a straight road and only takes about 20 mins to walk there with the kids.
Today Jackson was enjoying the nice weather and taking a lot of notice of his surrounding, this was when he made a discovery in the middle of the pavement a dead robin! He crouched down to have a look at it and said "mommy it's a bird! Why isn't he in the sky flying with his friends?" I really didn't know how to answer his question so said he was sleeping having an afternoon nap like LA does.
The thing is I'm worried now that I've lied to him, and I should have told him the truth but he's only 4.5 I want him to keep his innocence a little bit longer!
Is that wrong of me what do you guys think??

  1. It's a tricky one, but from my own experiences I would try to be as honest as possible.
My eldest sister passed away when I very young, my parents were honest with us, telling us she wouldn't be coming back.
We did the same when my da died, my niece wanted to know where he was, we explained that everyone eventually fell asleep and one day wouldn't wake up here, but somewhere else.
There's no right or wrong, you know at what age your child is able to handle the facts around death, try not to worry about it.

  2. Oh a sad awkward question. I would tend toward truth too. Though it can be hard. We have a rather funny book called Drop Dead by Babette Cole, it only deals with death due to old age, but it's ok for small kids. I feel for you though, poor robin too :-(

  3. Thank you both for your comments, we have had a family death overnight and I'm not sure whether or not to tell him and TP as neither of them ever met him and don't know of him :-(
